An Overview of Testicular Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma in a general sense is a very rare form of cancer, and even rarer is the occurrence of testicular mesothelioma. It’s so rare that most people including many doctors know very little about it. There is quite a bit more known about the more common types of mesothelioma, which are pleural and peritoneal, found in the lining of the lungs and abdomen.
However, testicular mesothelioma, although rare, does impact some people. Occurring in less than one percent of all patients diagnosed with mesothelioma, the testicular form of this cancer happens when cells mutate in the lining of the testicles. These cells then replicate rapidly, leading to the development of cancer.

What Causes Testicular Mesothelioma?
The most common forms of mesothelioma occur when a person has inhaled or ingested toxic asbestos fibers. It can take decades for the disease to show symptoms, but researchers and medical professionals are clear that it is linked to asbestos exposure.
Testicular mesothelioma, on the other hand, remains somewhat of a mystery. The majority of people diagnosed with this form of cancer don’t have a known history of being exposed to asbestos, and due to the rarity of the disease, there’s not a lot of research available. This doesn’t mean testicular mesothelioma isn’t linked to asbestos, but just that there isn’t a lot of conclusive information available at this point.

What Are the Symptoms?
There really aren’t symptoms associated with testicular mesothelioma for most people, although if there are they can include a buildup of fluid in the scrotum which is called a hydrocele, or a lump inside the scrotum. There may also be pain or swelling in the testicles, but it usually takes surgery for testicular mesothelioma to be correctly diagnosed.
It’s easy to misdiagnose this disease because of its rarity and symptoms that can be related to so many other diseases.
Usually, to diagnose testicular mesothelioma, a biopsy is performed, and the cells will typically show certain tumor markers of mesothelioma.
How Is It Treated?
Patients with testicular mesothelioma tend to have a much better prognosis as compared to patients with other forms of the disease. The median survival rates are shown in studies to be anywhere from 20 to 23 months, and one patient was known to live 15 years after the initial diagnosis.
The preferred method of treatment is surgery, which can include the removal of a portion of a testicle, or depending on the extent of the mesothelioma, the entire testicle. If the cancer has already spread to the patient’s lymph nodes located nearby, those may also be removed.
In some instances, after surgery, a patient would undergo chemotherapy and/or radiation to kill remaining malignant cells and to try and prevent the mesothelioma from coming back. In some cases, if the disease is diagnosed early on, chemotherapy and radiation may not be required.
